I agree. It is difficult to navigate conflict without hurting feelings. This is particularly true of areas where people have vested a sense of their identity. One can hope to approach these areas with a certain amount of grace, or at least patience, so that the person doesn’t feel attacked, rather just the idea challenged. Easier said than done.

I think this is one of the fundamental reasons why we worked well together at Ocean, we both like to come up with new ways to challenge the status quo. I feel like every time I approach something I am spending a great deal of time rethinking the processes before I even begin any work.

It can be very challenging at times since disagreement is by its very nature combative. When it involves something that an individual has a personal connection to (such as prior work), the conversation can take a very wrong turn. Avoiding that situation has always been difficult for me.

Thanks, Sean. I know without a doubt that those events fundamentally shifted my priorities and values reminding me to never take life for granted and to always hope for the future. If you ever get a chance to visit the memorial in PA, do it.

Heidi,

I felt like I knew you fairly well, yet I never knew that tidbit about Julius. Thanks so much for sharing. I think I felt much the same way…….except the whole getting pregnant and having a baby part. I always imagine that the previous generation felt much the same way with the assassination of Kennedy (x2).

LOL…you should wrap all your MISC boxes and put them under the Xmas tree. Regift your own things for yourself. BTW, I ran into Joe Sullivan on the ferry. So Fish World isn’t all that far away. I’ll be following rationalization still. What can I say. I got sucked into the drama.

I thought you had a ton of great points in your presentation. And I totally appreciate the idea of seeing what would happen with language choice. It gives people reason to think about just how important their words are. So I agree, it was successful. No negative sentiment about YOU, just about the language. A discussion worth having so thank you for providing a platform for it.

Thanks for the mention in your writeup Heidi. I had actually never done this before (used profanity in a presentation) but wanted to experiment with it and see what happened. Interesting how many people actually mentioned something. For that, I think the experiment was a success. After all, the goal is to get people talking and thinking. I don’t care if there was any negative sentiment generated about myself – if I got anyone thinking I deem it successful.
